What is HDHMR?
HDHMR (High-Density High Moisture Resistant board) is an engineered wood panel made by compressing wood fibres at high density and pressure, bonded with resin. It has a very smooth, uniform surface with no visible grain, which makes it ideal for PU or membrane-finished shutters and painted furniture.
What is Plywood?
Plywood is made by gluing together thin layers (veneers) of natural wood in alternating grain directions, then pressing them under heat. This cross-layered structure gives plywood excellent strength, screw-holding capacity and dimensional stability, which is why it's the default choice for load-bearing furniture in India.
HDHMR vs Plywood: Side-by-Side Comparison
| Parameter | HDHMR | Plywood (BWR/BWP grade) |
|---|---|---|
| Composition | Compressed wood fibres + resin | Cross-layered wood veneers |
| Surface finish | Very smooth, ideal for paint/PU/membrane | Slightly grainy, ideal for laminate/veneer |
| Moisture resistance | Good, but lower than BWP plywood | Very good (BWP grade), suited to Lucknow's humidity |
| Strength & screw holding | Good for shutters and doors | Excellent, best for wardrobe carcasses and heavy loads |
| Typical cost | Generally more affordable | Moderate to higher, depending on grade |
| Best used for | Painted/PU shutters, false fronts, panelling | Wardrobe boxes, kitchen cabinets, load-bearing units |
Pros of Each
HDHMR
- Smooth, seamless surface for high-gloss paint or PU finishes
- No visible wood grain - cleaner, more uniform look
- Generally more budget-friendly than plywood
- Good dimensional stability, resists warping
Plywood
- Higher structural strength for heavy, load-bearing furniture
- Better long-term moisture resistance in BWP/BWR grade
- Superior screw and hinge holding over years of use
- Well suited to India's humid, monsoon-heavy climate
Which Should You Choose?
For shutters, doors and panelling that will get a painted, PU or membrane finish, HDHMR is a smart, cost-effective choice. For the structural carcass of wardrobes, kitchen cabinets and anything that needs to bear weight over years of daily use - especially in a humid climate like Lucknow's - BWP or BWR grade plywood remains the safer, more durable option. Many of our projects actually use both: plywood for the box, HDHMR for the shutter face.
